Meet at UVA's Aquatic Fitness Center - We will then use vans and cars to caravan up to the mountains. Directions will be provided. If you have a car, please let us know, and bring it to help with rides We will drive about 1.5 hours to Shenandoah National Park. This is a 4-mile out-and-back hike to Mary’s Rock via Appalachian Trail. Picturesque views along the way, breathtaking 360-degree view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley from Mary's Rock Summit. This is a strenuous 3-hour hike! Be sure to wear shoes that are good for hiking, bring some bottled water and bring your own lunch in a bag. Wear warm clothes--the temperature at the top of the mountain will be 10 or 15 degrees F colder than the temperature at UVA. You should bring about $12 CASH with you to pay help with gas, park entrance and trail use fee. See you at the clock tower next to the AFC parking lot at 5:30 PM Saturday December 9!!! Everyone, please bring a flashlight AND WARM CLOTHES. That will be helpful during our OUTDOOR caroling fun! RETURNING FRIENDS: Please come to the clock tower next to the AFC parking lot to help with rides since we are expecting lots of people. Then you can drive to the Newmans' house. Directions will be given out at the clock tower next to the AFC parking lot. For those with cars, come to the AFC with your car and then we will see how many cars are needed— and leave unneeded cars in the stadium parking lot. What will we do? We’ll enjoy climbing and scrambling over boulders (optional). Our hike will provide you with the most expansive views in the Southern district of Shenandoah National Park! REGISTER HERE COST: $15, which covers National Park entrance fee and fuel costs. Enjoy this 6.9-km out-and-back trail. St. Mary’s Wilderness is one of the most famous hikes for hot weather. This is a beautiful water hike that requires crossing cold mountain streams with NO bridge :-) The water is only 3 inches (76 mm) deep, but it will be refreshing. You’ll have to walk over slippery rocks and navigate over the stream. Are you up to the challenge?! You’ll need to wear water shoes or old athletic shoes that are okay to get wet. We will pass a Walmart on our drive, so those who don’t have the right shoes can purchase water shoes there ($15-$20). On the way back from the hike, we will stop at a historic church in Staunton, Virginia, and eat a delicious dinner together!
